The intention was clear. Capture the gloomy yet beautiful atmosphere of winter Berlin. It's hard to find a city competing with this one that combines elements of the melancholic artistic touch that winter's short days give it.

Brutal buildings

Berlin is a very diverse city. In addition to its history, monuments and various museums, its charm takes place in the streets of the city. Berlin is perfect for street photography. You don't have to have a set itinerary to get to know the city. Just walk around and look around. I went to Berlin to capture the true winter atmosphere there, including brutalist buildings, of which there are quite a lot in Berlin. Brutalist architecture has a very hard and even brutal effect on the viewer, yet the name originated from a French word that translates to raw concrete. The main boom in brutalist buildings took place in the 1950s and 1980s. years of the last century. To my astonishment, unfortunately (or by God), the Czech embassy in Berlin is also associated with Brutalist architecture. The building looks like a fortress, yet it earned the nickname "UFO".

Art all around

When the Berlin Wall was dismantled in 1989, a section of over 1 km long remained, which today serves as an open-air gallery. The East Side Gallery is an outdoor mural gallery with free admission. Everyone can go for a walk here and see well-known pictures such as Brezhnev and Honecker kissing, which was taken by a French journalist in 1979. It is said that this is how socialist papals used to greet each other. The most photogenic part is at its easternmost point, where the Oberbaumbrücke spans the Spree, one of Berlin's prettiest bridges, built in 1732.

Berlin is very influenced by the new generation, which is mainly about promoting diverse modern culture. How many times have you found yourself in the corner of a dark alley, which is strewn with outdoor street art, until you suddenly find yourself inside an underground shop selling books, vinyl and other artistic interests. I would be quite interested to see how Berlin would affect me in the summer months. Maybe another time.
